Root barriers near large trees
A vertical barrier between a big tree and the house slows roots from drawing moisture out of the clay directly under the foundation.
Your Options
San Antonio live oaks are one of the reasons older streets look the way they do, and nobody is suggesting you remove one. A root barrier is the usual compromise: the tree stays, the soil right against the house stops being dried out from underneath.

Can fixing drainage alone stop foundation movement?
Sometimes, if the movement is recent and mild and water is clearly the cause. If the house has already dropped measurably, drainage stops it getting worse but does not lift it back. An inspection tells you which situation you are in.
How close to the house should a root barrier go?

Do I still need to water my foundation if I install drainage?
